En 1961, Eddie Felson battait le champion des Etats-Unis de billard au terme d'une partie entrée dans la légende. Vingt-cinq années ont passé. Eddie n'a plus jamais rejoué. Il est devenu représentant en alcools. Et lorsqu'il visite une académie de billard, c'est uniquement dans l'espoir d'y voir quelques jolis coups. Mais plus personne n'a son sens de l'arnaque ni son toucher de balle. Or, un soir, arrive Vincent, un jeune si doué qu'Eddie retrouve, à le voir jouer, l'excitation qu'il éprouvait à ses débuts... Un pur chef d'oeuvre. Ce qui est plutôt rare pour une suite. Mais Martin Scorsese a du génie et il ne se réfère à l'Arnaqueur de Robert Rossen qu'à travers le personnage de Paul Newman. La mise en scène est tout simplement éblouissante, le scénario est superbe et les acteurs sont fabuleux.
